Gallery was really the first php app/CMS I ever used, way back with the 1.x version. It was an awesome way to organize all those pictures I had laying around that I wanted to put up on the site. Lately though, I’m finding it to be clunky and overly complicated. Every time I want to change my theme in WordPress I have to fiddle with it in order to get the gallery to display right. I really don’t want to dump all of my pictures into WordPress itself however, since there’s over 1000 of them, and re-categorizing them would just drive me nuts and take way too long. So, I guess I’m stuck using Gallery for now. Maybe the 3.0 version (when its released) will allow for better WordPress integration.
Update Nov 19: Well, I tried the beta version of Gallery3 on another site a few weeks ago and absolutely hated it. Its not all that different from Gallery2. Just too much app for what I need it for. Soo.. today I grabbed the NexGen Gallery plugin for WordPress and so far I am liking it. There are a few things I’m confused by (eg, “gallery” vs “album”) but I think once I work with it some more it’ll be okay. It takes care of my two biggest issues: a) integrating with my WordPress blog and the theme I chose, and b) it gives me an easy way to upload/add/organize the pictures. I can keep the files organized on the server in the same hierarchy and upload new pictures to the folder they go with, and then log into WordPress and add them to the site with just a few clicks. I can even insert single pics into posts pretty easily.
