Violated.

Went to go to work this morning, and found my car broken into. Bart’s car also got hit. They took our stereos and radar detectors, and Bart’s credit card & atm card. This isn’t the first time cars have been broken into in our apartment complex, either. Thieves hit the same parking lot last summer. Hopefully they go to use one of Bart’s cards and get videotaped.

Edit: Bart found his atm card. They also took a set of tools and a lawn chair from his car.

Edit Feb 8th – I have full coverage on my car, so I only need to pay a $100 deductible and I get my stereo and window replaced, along with the molding/pieces of my car that got ripped out when they took the stereo & radar detector. Bart had to pay about $200 out-of-pocket to have his window replaced.

Pictures of the damage.

Unsolicited Bulk Advertising

We live in an apartment, and as such have a small mailbox in the front part of the building. I don’t always get to check my mail every day of the week, and lately it seems we’ve been getting an excessive amount of mail, most of it junk, albeit directly addressed to us. Our mail carrier also delivers a wad of ads called “ShopWise” which is delivered on Tuesdays and totally fills the mailbox from top to bottom – this is addressed to “Resident” and our apt number. Its all coupons and ads for some local and national businesses (ie, Rite Aid, Big Lots, etc). In over a year of living here I have only read it on rare occasion and never use any of the coupons from it.

I hadn’t checked our mail on Monday and we apparently got a big pile of stuff since its the holidays and everyone is sending holiday cards and such. I also got a Netflix, and Bart got quite a lot of mail, some bills, mostly credit card junk mail. On Tuesday I retrieved the mail, and found it all crunched up in the bottom of our mailbox because the postal carrier decided to stuff the “ShopWise” mailer in on top of it and smash it all down so it would fit. Because of this, when I opened the mailbox about half of everything in it spilled out on the floor everywhere. I took the “ShopWise” and put it on top of the mailboxes and left it there because I didn’t want it.

Today when I went to check our mail the only thing I found in the mailbox was the  “ShopWise” mailer, with a note written on the back of it – “This is mail! Please treat it that way! Thanks” — this is where I vehemently disagree. This is NOT mail. This is a prime example of “Unsolicited Bulk Advertising.” Or, the real-world version of spam.

Shit-tastic

Today was just unbelievably dumb.

I got to work a little early so I could upgrade my workstation, which I thought would be a quickish thing, but nooo. Kubuntu had other ideas. The GUI install bombed out and borked my debconf. I rebooted and X &/or KDE were borked such that I had no GUI. So I ended up spending about 45 minutes “fixing” it and re-doing the upgrade, which finally completed successfully. Except for the fact I have no sound again. Grr.

Then there was workstuff. People’s sites overloading servers, yaddayadda. Busybusybusy.

Bart called me in late morning/early afternoon to let me know some asshole busted off the antenna on his car sometime last night – likely someone from our apt complex but possibly just a passing vandal.

Then I got home and retrieved the mail, which contained our electric bill from LBWL. Which is due tomorrow. I don’t know why we’re just now getting it since the “date printed” date on it says Nov 19, and I’m assuming it came from just across town or wherever LBWL gets them printed. The envelope also was not sealed at all. Not making me happy. I paid it online just now, hopefully that’s good enough.

Um. Yeah. Security, what’s that?

I just got home from work to discover that the doorhandle/lock for the apt building I live in has apparently been BUSTED OFF, and jimmied to stay unlocked. I just called the complex office and left a voicemail for them to call me back about this.

Also, I was leaving for work on Monday around 3:20pm when I encountered two black teenagers looking to get in the building. One of them was yanking on the door like he expected it to just open for him and seemed upset to be locked out. I didn’t really have a choice whether or not to let them in as I had to leave, but this didn’t set too well with me.

Looking for a new apartment.

So I decided last night that while I like the size of this apartment and the location, and the price – the security, neighbors, (lack of) maintenance, and a ton of other things, bugs me enough about it to make me want to move when our lease comes up at the end of Feb.

We pretty much have three choices:

  • Stay here another year
  • Find an apartment in/near Lansing
  • Find an apartment in/near Grand Rapids

If we move to GR, Consumers will move us, so we won’t have that expense. I kind of want to stay near Lansing though. *sigh*
