Perl. Merf!

(Aka wacky adventures in cPanel)

Sometimes there is a conflict in the version of perl installed, ie:

/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8

vs

/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8

The system thinks one is being used, but is updating the other.. solution? after 2 hours it came to me.. /scripts/fixperl. Which basically just moves one out of the way and simlinks it to the other one. GAH.

Nighty night! (soon.. I’m still at work.)

Computer Problems

My PC is dead. I went to use it this afternoon before I went to work and it wouldn’t boot. Actually, it powers on, but it never POSTs. :( RAM, Motherboard, videocard.. could be one of those. Or all three. *sigh*

My workstation at work isn’t much better. I wanted to reformat it with Kubuntu the other night but I can’t get it to correctly recognize and use my USB stick to copy some files I’ll need to keep.

Edit: Turns out its okay. I unplugged it today while I was gone at work, and when I came home I plugged it back in and it started right up. I suspect it has something to do with the “suspend” function I like to use. Guess I won’t be using it anymore! :)

Testing New Blogging Interface

I’m testing out an add-on for FireFox called “Performancing”, which allows me to bring up an editor within FireFox to make posts to blogs. So far, it seems pretty neat. The only things I’m missing from the regular WordPress editor at the site are my extensions for embedding a picture from Gallery2 and the contact form plugin.

Time Woes

I just realized the blog is showing the timestamp as “CDT” with the time an hour out because I set the correct offset in the admin panel, but the server is running on CDT right now. So apparently WordPress (or the theme I am using) is pulling the timezone info directly from the server instead of using the offset number to figure it out. Argh!

Edit: Fixed by switching themes again. Hopefully this will be the last time I switch for awhile.. constantly editing the sidebar is getting kind of annoying.

VOIP Phone Update #2

WE HAVE A NEW PHONE! YES! I am so happy about that. And now we have 2 handsets as well, thanks to my forgetfulness and the power of “teh Internet”! I still paid for about 7 weeks worth of service I didn’t use, but that is really my fault for not being more persistant with Packet8.

[Packet8 pimp] I believe they are still doing their customer referral program where if I send someone a sign up link, I get an Amazon gift card (dang, it used to be a $25 service credit) if they sign up and stay a customer for at least 2 months, and the person who signs up also gets an instant credit (basically, your signup fee gets waived). If anyone is interested, please email me or comment in this post with your email address. Their basic residential service is ~$23/month including taxes/fees (depending on your state too, I think). Unlimited minutes to US and Canada, special rates to Europe, etc. I have no complaints about their phone service, and I can only hope that their customer service [read: sympathy for those with no landline phone and limited cell minutes] improves as time goes on.
