Went Up North

On Thursday I went up to Traverse City with the goal of seeing my dad, rummaging through the stuff I left at his house and bringing some of it back with me. I have mixed feelings about going up there. I found myself missing my old apartment up there more than my dad’s house. I had intended to stay until Saturday morning, but found myself restless after I packed up my car Friday evening, so I decided to come back down early.

Traffic and Road Closures

I know its stupid to gripe about traffic, since if you live in a city of any size, bad traffic is a given. But, I hate it nonetheless.

Ever since we moved into our apartment, Bart and I have griped about how poorly maintained Veterans Drive is. Potholes in the winter that you could lose an entire wheel in. Lumpy and bumpy and just plain awful. Unfortunately we don’t really have a choice of whether or not to use it since we can’t get to our apartment any other way. However, many people in this city (myself included when I lived at my dad’s) use Veterans as a “shortcut” to get from 14th St to South Airport Rd and vice-versa, especially going from somewhere in town to the Mall or the Crossings shopping area.

This week Veterans was “closed to thru traffic” so that it can finally be resurfaced. However, this has not deterred people from using it as a passthrough. In fact, it almost seems like people are using it just because it is closed off. Yesterday I witnessed an older woman drive up to the barricades, pause, then make a u-turn, and instead of watching where she was going, she continued to stare over her shoulder at the barricades, as if she was just “taking a curious look” at what was going on.

My message to anyone who lives in or around Traverse City is this: if you live somewhere off of Veterans where you must use it, then fine. If you’re using it as a passthrough, STOP. At least until the construction is over.

Die You Old Decrepit A/C Unit, DIE! DIE! DIE!!!

The damn thing is driving me nuts. I haven’t ever been able to have a phone conversation in our “office” (2nd bedroom) while it is running. I couldn’t imagine trying to sleep in here. On Monday, to my dismay, it got even louder. Something is really wrong with the thing and I hope it just totally craps out so the apartment maintenance people are forced to replace it.

Crashy Smashy

I left to go to Quiznos this morning at 11:00 to meet Bart for lunch. When I got back, our sliding glass patio door was shattered and the maintenance people from the apartment complex were there cleaning it up.

Apparently, the lawn care people drove their lawn mower into the door, shattering the outer pane of glass all over our patio. I think they ran into our grill and knocked it into the door, actually. Nothing else seemed to be damaged. What a weird thing to have happen.
